Preparing for system Installation

VRLA battery system installation involves a series of activities from planning and initial receipt to final billing and warranty registration. As part of this preparatory activity, the installer should develop system schematics that identify how the individual batteries will be placed on the rack, interlinked, and numbered. The cables that come with the system assume a specific rack and installation configuration. The rack must be assembled and installed before the VRLA battery can be installed.

Rack assembly instructions are included in a separate file that comes with the rack. The battery is rated at 77°F (25°C). Running at cooler temperatures reduces emissions time. Running at high temperatures reduces the overall battery life. For every 15°F increase above 77°F, life is reduced by 50%.

Upon receipt of the goods, the packaging should be thoroughly checked for any physical damage and ensure that the correct quantity of items has been received. The package should then be opened and the VRLA battery inspected to ensure there is no hidden damage. Special attention should be paid to the containers and terminals of the batteries received.

Refer to the BILL of Materials and make sure the items received are complete and consistent with the description on the bill of Materials. If any damage is found, or if the package quantity is different from the shipping document, the carrier should be contacted and a claim lodged with the carrier within 10 days.

The contents of the goods shall be checked and counted to ensure that correct instructions, drawings, and quantities of batteries, hardware kits, cables, and accessories identified on the Bill of materials have been received. If the count is incorrect or the component type is incorrect, contact the shipper as soon as possible.

The battery is fully charged during transportation, but some self-discharge occurs during transportation, the extent of which is a function of transportation time and temperature. Fully charged open circuit voltage is 2.12 to 2.16 volts per battery (6.36 to 6.48 and 12.72 to 12.96 VDC for 6 and 12-volt batteries, respectively). Once received, the voltage of each cell should be at least 2.07 volts, or 6.2 and 12.4 volts for 6 and 12-volt VRLA batteries respectively. If at these lowest voltages, charge the battery as soon as possible. If the voltage of each battery is equal to or less than 2 volts (6 and 12 volts), the battery should not be used and the supplier should be contacted immediately.

Electrical hazards

The battery system is at risk of shock and high short circuit current. Note the following precautions when installing and maintaining VRLA batteries:

1. Remove all personal metal objects (watches and rings).

3. Wear comprehensive goggles and rubber gloves.

4. Observe the polarity of the circuit.

5. Do not turn on or off the live circuit.

6. Before handling the battery on the metal rack, measure the voltage between the battery and the rack to ensure that the battery is not unintentionally grounded. It should be zero. If not, determine the cause and correct it before proceeding.


Lead-acid batteries must be recycled. Batteries contain lead and dilute sulfuric acid. Disposition by federal, state, and local regulations. Do not discard them in landfills, lakes, or other unauthorized locations.

Chemical hazards

Any gel or liquid discharge from VRLA batteries is an electrolyte containing dilute sulphuric acid, which is harmful to skin and eyes; Is conductive; And corrosive.

If the electrolyte comes into contact with the skin, wash it immediately and thoroughly. If electrolyte gets into the eyes, rinse thoroughly with water or special neutralization eyewash for 10 minutes, and seek medical attention immediately.

Neutralize any spilled electrolyte with a special solution in the spill kit or with a solution of 1 pound of sodium bicarbonate to 1 gallon of water.

Fire, explosion, and heat hazards

Lead-acid batteries can contain an explosive mixture of hydrogen that is expelled when overcharged. Do not short-circuit the terminals. Do not smoke or spark near the battery.

Do not install or charge batteries in an airtight container. Install a single battery with a 0.5-inch space between them for convection cooling. If contained, make sure containers or cabinets, and rooms are adequately ventilated to prevent the buildup of gases that may be vented.


Do not attempt to remove the vent (valve) or add water from the 12V VRLA battery. This can create safety concerns and void warranties.

Be careful when handling and moving batteries. Be sure to use an electrolyte containing dilute sulphuric acid for proper handling equipment.
